A ruined village, a fleeing family, and two children lost on the road to exile… Kyona and Adriel try to escape from their pursuers and reach a more welcoming country.
Winner of the audience award for scripts read at the 2011 Premiers Plans Festival
and released in 2021,
La Traversée (The Crossing) is Forence Miailhe's first feature
after a number of short films. “The subject of
La Traversée came from the meeting of
two emotions: family history – my great-grandparents fleeing Odessa at the
beginning of the 20 th century, my mother and her younger brother on the roads of
France to get to the Free Zone in 1940 – and the spectacular increase in the
movement of people over recent decades. I saw reflected in the journeys of Kurdish,
Syrian, Sudanese, Afghan families the journey of my own Jewish family. People
pushed out by war, famine, persecution, seeking a better place where they can
rebuild their lives, ready to face any peril. (…) The decision to follow two heroes who
are leaving childhood was taken with my co-writer, novelist Marie Desplechin, whose
books are mainly directed at young audiences”. (Florence Miailhe) “As beautiful as it
is singular,
La Traversée is above all a unique animated project painted on glass
sheets directly in front of the camera giving the spectator the impression that the
image is being created in front of their very eyes”. (Olivier Delcroix;
Le Figaro)
