Born in Iceland in 1984, Hlynur Pálmason, a visual artist and filmmaker, studied at the Danish National Film School. His graduation short, A Painter (2013) was nominated at the Danish Film Academy. His next short, Seven Boats (2014) premiered at Toronto. Vinterbrødre (Winter Brothers, 2017) is his first feature. Hlynur lives and works in Copenhagen. He is currently working on his second feature A White, White Day. He also exhibits his art projects and video installations.

“With Emil, the main character of
Winter Brothers, I explore the lack of love or desire and the need to be desired and loved. With Emil, I wanted to describe all of that in cinematographic language. Emil desperately hangs on to someone or something, but at the same time he is foreign to it. I tried to pare him down to the extent that only his primal instincts appeared. Perhaps that is why he suffers so much. He has the wisdom of idiots. Maybe he is a little out of step from his period” (Hlynur Pálmason).
