Chabname Zariab

In Afghanistan, “batchas” are young boy prostitutes in private houses where they have to dress as girls and dance for an audience of men, under the “protection” of a master. Saman, 15, is already an old, almost pubescent, batcha, who is concerned to see the “new guard” arriving in the figure of Bijane, a young boy he has to initiate.

At the age of 7, after having left her native Afghanistan, Chabname Zariab settled in Montpellier, before moving to the capital for her studies. She took part in a writing competition and was the Ile de France winner at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008, as part of the youth award. She wrote a feature script, État second, followed by a self-produced documentary Je passe. She then published her first novel, Le Pianiste afghan published by the éditions de L'Aube. Au bruit des clochettes is her first fiction short. She is currently working on her next novel and the development of a first feature, Les Ambitieuses.
