David Nawrath was born and raised in Berlin. When he was eleven years old he moved to Teheran, Iran, and lived there for two years. This cultural influence lead him about ten years later to make his documentary Moharram - Waiting for the dawn, in 2005. Since 2005 he has been studying directing at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin, where he directed Der Schulweg in 2005, Dunkle Zeit in 2006, Eine Minute Freiheit in 2007, and Der Neue Tag in 2008. His short film Was bleibt was nominated for the 2008 official German Short film prize.
