Maried to Françoise, Jean has been having an affair with Catherine for six months. He takes her on location for a film he will be making in Camargue, but treats her so horribly that she finally takes refuge with her family in Provence. Unable to stay far from Catherine, Jean joins her, beginning a cycle of break-ups and reconciliations.

Before being made into a film, We Will Not Grow Old Together was an autobiographical book written by Maurice Pialat himself. "I always thought that for this film, the actors should have a real resemblance to the protagonists of the real story... myself and the other character. Jean Yanne, in my opinion at least, physical resembles me. (...) I made this film to rid myself of an obsession. When the film was done, the story became another story, one that I had created and not lived.
