In the middle of the winter of 1944, in a small mountain village in Trentino, northern Italy, the war is both distant and omnipresent. After studying literature in Bologna and Paris, Maura Delpero studied drama in Buenos Aires. She started out as an assistant and then went on to make a series of short and medium-length films that regularly won awards. She spent a long time working on the project for Hagar, which also won several awards, and directed it under the title Maternal (2019), winning four awards at the Locarno Festival. Vermiglio, her second feature film in competition at Venice, won the Silver Lion.
