Written and acted by Aki Kaurimäki, The Liar is his brother Mika's graduation film. ‘A starving artist, The Liar's hero is marked more with French cultural resonance than with Finnish ones. He ponders existentialism and discourses endlessly about life and love much like Alexandre in The Mother and the Whore by Jean Eustache, a similarity made all the more striking by Kaurismäki's physical resemblance with Léaud. Ville Alfa also takes after the bohemian artists in Henry Murger's novel Scenes of Bohemian Life, which allows us to consider The Liar, Kaurismäki's first script, to be an first try at the theme of his coming feature-length film Bohemian Life.
