John Shank was born in 1977 in Bloomington, in the United States. He divided his studies between the United States and Belgium. In 1996, he enrolled at the Institute of Broadcasting Arts, where he went on to direct two short documentaries (La Pensée ne vient pas du ciel and Clandestin) before directing his first fiction, Un veau pleurait, la nuit. He is currently working on a feature-length film adaptation of a novel by J-G Ballard.
