Born in Rostov-on-Don, in Southern Russia, Anguelina Nikonova moved to New York at the age of 17. In 2001, she graduated from the New York School of Visual Arts, where she specialised in cinematographic and video directing. He graduation short, Isosceles, won her best experimental film award at the Cinevue Film Festival Florida, and best director at the Saint Ann Festival in Moscow. In 2005 her first documentary, Flyover Country, was screened at the Fitil cinema, in Moscou. Since then she has written several feature screenplays, including Portrait au crépuscule (Twilight Portrait, that she co-wrote with Olga Dykhovitchnaia "This film talks about an unlikely relationship between a man and a woman, who are both very different from each other. These characters have very little chance of having a relationship in reality. That is why it was a very interesting subject for me to explore. That is probably what cinema should be doing: staging fantastic situations (what would happen if?) and taking people on a journey. That is what Portrait au crépuscule does, and I'm proud of that".
