"Gentleness and innocence attract me", said Buñuel. With Tristana, he films the loss of innocence and its consequences. But at the same time he films the appearance of another form of gentleness – that of old age. Tristana becomes a strong woman at terms with herself, whereas her initiator softens as he grows older. For his second film with Catherine Deneuve, Buñuel takes her to a more bitter register than in Belle de Jour, to a place where triviality softens her image of icy beauty.
