"The opening scene in The Worthless, the only feature-length fiction that came out of the collaboration between the two Kaurismäki brothers, shows an aerial view of Finland's capitol. (...) This view shows us the film's subject, the beginning of the film's fiction, the coming together of two bodies of work, and gives us a first glimpse of the places revisited in the coming films: the old polytechnic school that would serve as the headquarters of the Hamlet family, the Old Church garden seen in Calamari Union and Hamlet Goes Business, Yrjönkatu street where the businessman in Crime and Punishment was assassinated, and finally the street on which is found the Dubrovnik restaurant in Drifting Clouds (Kauas pilvet karkaavat). (...) With this opening scene, Kaurismäki's work at once demonstrates its geographic uniqueness, and its historical, social and cultural singularity." (S. Kyösola)
