The War Game begins on the eve of a nuclear attack on London and Kent. In particular, it explores the explanation - or lack of explanation - for the measures foreseen in case of a crisis. It finishes a month later, when the public services remain in practical chaos and the morale of the population seems irreparably ruined.

The War Game was originally made to fill an official BBC order, but the BBC categorically refused to schedule it and forbid its being shown on television anywhere else in the world until 1985. As a result, the film was only able to be seen in cinemas. This medium-length film was made in the style of a documentary, its subject being a possible thermonuclear attack on Great Britain. "With this documentary, I didn't have to exaggerate the horror of the situation. If The War Game shocks the spectator, it's not because we used terrifying effects, but because he sees for the first time with his own eyes what he does not want to see, and what we don't want him to see." (P. Watkins)
