A 10-year-old boy lives with his young mother on a farm surrounded by deep forest in the remote wilds of the Finnish countryside. From time to time, the boy visits his father - a man of great violence - in prison. Locked in the stable is an unruly horse, the boy's only other companion. Their simple life is disrupted when a stranger appears...

Jukka Pekka Valkeapää was born in 1977, in Porvoo in Finland. He studied directing at the film department of the University of Art and Design in Helsinki. He has directed two award-winning short films Keinu in 2003 and Silmat kiinni ilman käsiä and a number of commercials, as well as working in the fields of graphic design and illustration. Muukalainen is his first long feature.
