This film, "exotic" without recourse to elephants or tiger hunting, is unique in Jean Renoir's career. The negation of cinematographic canons, the humanism spirituality and sensuality close to this film maker's heart, are all apparent. Yet this western meditation upon the East masks Renoir's suffering at being banished to Hollywood, and may be seen as his search for solace in a distant paradise.
