For this cinematic adaptation of Jules Verne's novel, Karel Zeman wanted the 125,000 images of his film to resemble the original engravings of Benen and Riou. The actors move about in a flat setting, drawn in black lines, on a white background, with splashes of ink or light to suggest depth. For each shot, Zeman had to combine techniques from fiction, animation, and marionette films. The Fabulous World of Jules Verne recalls the films of Georges Méliès through its use of light shades and especially through the humour and poetry present in the film's numerous clever ideas.
