Underground life, exploitations, Life on the streets are the backdrop for this trilogy about the everyday life of foreigners in Roma. Three nigerian prostitutes on the edge of a country road spend their days on broken down sofas. Two Albanian moonlighting are recruitd for all kinds of odd jobs. n Egyptian night pump attendant tries to work regardless of his problems with late-night customers.The film's idea come from the encounters in the surreal atmosphere of the outskirts of Rome. From the very first images, two worlds are distinguished between those who drive cars on those who accost them. Some play the game, others have given up. All have toldtheir story and drawn their pictures with the freedom of expression that Matteo Garrone has given them. (Moreover, the flashback images in the third episode where taken from a film made in Egypt by Ahmed the pump attendant himself).

Born in Rome in 1968, Matteo Garrone graduated from art school and worked as assistant cameraman for two years. He became a full-time painter in 1990. In 1993 he set up a cultural association - which became a popular meeting place. In 1966 he began directing with his first short, "Silouhette", which became the first part of "Terra di Mezzo" and which obtained the Golden Sacher award given by Nanni Moretti.
