Nima, a soon-to-be groom, drives a brand new tractor behind his brother and mother who are riding a motorcycle. The mother's waistband is accidently caught in the rear wheel, throwing her off the motorbike. Following too closely, Nima's tractor tragically kills her. Sorrow and guilt overwhelm Nima, who can't forgive himself, and he heads to Lhasa as a pilgrim, prostrating all the way. However, his pilgrimage does not alleviate his grief and guilt. On the way back from Lhasa, he meets an old man; together they cross the no man's land.

Sonthar Gyal was born in an art teacher's family in Amdo, currently Qinghai Province. He studied fine arts at the Qinghai Normal University and then trained in cinematography at the Beijing Film Academy. He started his career as an art teacher and then worked as a cinematographer for such directors as Pema Tseden. The Sun Beaten Path is his first feature film.
