In one sense, Subida al cielo (Mexican Bus Ride) could be described as being the first Bunñuelian comedy. "In a single journey a series of events happens which normally only occur in several journeys. In general reality is not as concentrated". (Luis Buñuel) A stream of obstacles and improbable situations give the film a lightness which tends towards the burlesque. "I wanted to avoid strict realism. And I was delighted to be able to put in scenes where nothing important happens", said Buñuel. The film was made on a low budget, so much so that Buñuel could not shoot the ending for the film that had initially been planned. Nevertheless, the lack of financial security rejoins, by pure chance, the spirit of the film: the models of the sets appear false and naïf, and accentuate the unreal dimension of the film.
