Cristi Puiu

Romania
2001 Fiction 1h30
Ovidiu, a young man from Constanta, runs his own business: selling snacks and soft drinks out of the window of his flat. He wants to expand and buy a kiosk, but doesn't have the money. A local crook offers him an impressive amount of cash for an apparently simple job: he has to take a bag to an address in Bucharest. It seems, however, that others are interested in the contents of the bag.

Cristi Puiu was born in Bucharest in 1967. After the fall of the communist regime, he moved to Switzerland in 1990 and joined a group of young painters. He began studying the plastic arts at the ESAV in Geneva, before graduating from the directing department in 1996. Avant le petit déjeuner, a school film, was selected in 1995 for the Locarno film festival. He has also directed documentaries, including 25.12.1995 Bucharest, the north railway station in 1996, and Asylum in 1998. Back in Romania, he has continued to paint and make films, and won a scriptwriting prize in 1999 at a contest organised by the ONC, with Marfa si banii, his first feature-length film.
