A mysterious Green Knight rides into a court celebration and challenges Gauvain, a young knight, to strike him with his own axe. On the condition that he, the Green Knight, may return exactly the same blow in one year and one day. Gauvain accepts but the Green knight stands up, retrieves his head, and reminds Gauvain of his promise. Sire Gauvain is the screen adaptation of one of the most mysterious and ambiguous of all the Arthurian stories, a late 14th century manuscript by an unknown author.

Beginning in the cinema as a stage manager and then a production manager, Martin Beilby spent several years working on writing Sire Gauvain before directing it. The script was read last year during the short film script readings.
