After starting as a critic at the Cahiers du cinéma André Téchiné turned to directing with Paulina s'en va (Pauline is Leaving), followed by Souvenirs d'en France (French Provincial), Barocco, Les sœurs Brontë (The Brontë Sisters. He started shooting with Catherine Deneuve in 1981 with Hôtel des Amériques (Hotel America), and she would remain one of his favourite actresses. He also worked with Jeanne Moreau, Gérard Depardieu, Marie-France Pisier, Isabelle Adjani, Isabelle Huppert and later Juliette Binoche, Lambert Wilson, Emmanuelle Béart, Daniel Auteuil, Michel Blanc, Guillaume and Sandrine Kiberlain. In 1985 he won the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival for Rendez-vous. Then in 1995 he won the César for Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay, as well as the Prix Louis-Delluc for the film Les Roseaux sauvages (The Wild Reeds). He went on to shoot, among other films, Les voleurs (Thieves), Alice et Martin, Les égarés (Strayed), Les témoins (The Witnesses), La fille du RER (The Girl on the Train), Impardonnables (Unforgivable), L'homme qu'on aimait trop (In the Name of My Daughter). In 2016, his new film Quand on a 17 ans (Being 17) was screened at the Berlin Festival
