At weekends Rachel, a young student, looks after Hugo, a 3-year old boy who lives alone with his father. While babysitting one evening, her best friend and two male friends come round for an impromptu party.

After studying literature at the University of Genève, Frédéric Mermoud was awarded a diploma in directing from ECAL. He made two shorts there: Son jour à elle (1998) and Les Electrons libres (1999). L'Escalier, his first short after leaving ECAL, was selected for Premiers Plans in 2004.
