Carlo and Laura are music students at the conservatory and fall in love with each other. Laura decides to live with Carlo in the large flat left to him by his father.She confesses this decision to the priest she has gone to see since her childhood, who tells her she is going against her Church and religion. After the idyllic first few days, Carlo's close ambivalent friends, Marcello and his sister Marta, make Laura begin to doubt the wisdom of her decision.
