The narrator of Pieta is Julian, who tells the story of the loss of his best friend Jacob. He did not see Jacob's mother Rebecca again until years after his friend's death, although his recollection of idyllic sunny afternoons in the garden with them shows that she was always a replacement of his own mother whom he had lost at a very young age.
