The feeling when you wake up that you are not sure if you are forgetting who you really are, maybe you are really more real someplace else and you are forgetting the most important thing. What is that most important thing? Something is slipping away from you. It is a bothersome feeling. Especially combined with the feeling that life is hurtling you through time and space in a direction you aren't sure you want to be going.

Former pirate radio programmer and print journalist, Micah Magee took a Fulbright fellowship from her native Texas to Berlin. Her graduation film, Coming Home, won the audience award in Angers in 2012. She and her husband, Danish filmmaker Johan Carlsen, run a small Berlin production company and directors co-op, Makrorama. Layla in the Sky is her first feature.
“Sometimes there is something that has to get out, and it doesn't matter if you have exactly the right tools to tell it with, it will find a way to be told. Layla in the Sky was made in the places of my childhood, where my teenage cousins are now: high schools built by prison architects, trailers, rock bars, abandoned half-built subdivisions, the corporate parks between the fields. We adjusted our production approach to the means we had (my husband producing, our kids acting, cousins driving, friends as crew). Many of the events are autobiographical but the film is fiction, built from stories and characters that I suppose tend to repeat themselves in certain settings all over the world.”
