"When my hero Travis arrives from Mexico walking along the railway lines, I only knew that he had come to look for his wife and son, lost four years previously. In practical terms the second half of the screenplay had not been written, yet, and we created day by day with Sam Shepard, often over the phone. We filmed Paris-Texas as if we had no cinematographic memory, like a first film without any artistic references. This way of working somewhat disconcerted the American backers who refused to give us their dollars. Filming like that is an adventure, a night flight without visibility. For me having a story which goes straight through to the end as if it was on rails would be a nightmare for me. The idea of a screenplay which inevitably determines the characters frightens me. Filming means more than just executing what is written down on paper. It means staying open to possibilities and to the unexpected" (Wim Wenders). The film won the Palme d'or in Cannes in 1984.
