Mrs Flynn's four children are reunited in their family home in Glasgow. They are mourning the recent death of their mother and preparing the funeral. During an endless night, ravaged by a storm, they try to get even. Thomas, the eldest and devout brother, decides to spend the night close to his mother's coffin in the church. Michael, injured by Duncan during a fight at the pub, needs to hold out until morning in order to pretend his injury is a work injury. Sheila, a spastic, is exasperated by her brother Thomas' attitude because he refuses to leave the church, so she decides to go home on her own. John, furious with the thrashing Duncan gave Michael, rallies his cousin Tanga to prepare their revenge. Each member of the family, hurt and furious, needs to find their way, in order to over come their anguish. As the town starts to emerge from the storm, the family is born again and reunited to mourn their mother.
