First there was the day when Lorenzo and his friends asked a prostitute to make love to one of there friends who supposedly had cancer. Then the day when Lorenzo gave up school to unload tomatoes. The day when the all took themselves to be forgers. The day when they set up a tomato black market. Then there was also the day when Lorenzo lost his little brother and got drunk for the first time. There were days when they played like children, and others when suffered like men. A serie of tranquil days in the outskirt of Roma, where hate in the suburbs gives to a gentle way of life rather than will to kill. Truffault liked filming adolescents because, as he said, "whatever they do, they are doing it for the first time". Gianni Zanasi gives the young actors in this film a wonderful playground, an arena for learning and discovery. In exchange for their truth, he gives them the cinema. A well-meaning exchange, a pledge of tenderness.
