Kerstin Bastian was born in 1960 in Königs Wüsterhausen. She went to college and trained as a building worker, then went on to work as assistant film-set designer for GDR television. Since 1984, she has been studying directing at the Hoschule für Film und Fernsehen in Potsdam.
