Ellis and Neckbone are two teenagers who live by the Mississippi, and love having adventures on the river. Neckbone takes Ellis to an island where he has discovered a boat stuck up a tree. The boys hope to get it back into the water to be able to use it. But the boat is occupied by Mud, a mysterious man who seems to be hiding on the island. The boys make friends with him and, after coming to an agreement, accept to help him repair the boat. Mud tells them that he is waiting for a visit from his girlfriend, Juniper. The next day Ellis and Neckbone see the young woman in town. They tell Mud, who asks them to give her a message …
