On 1st May 1959, the police arrest a drunk in Rome's train station. He is in fact a respectable communist mathematician at Naples University. When he returns to his family and friends in Naples, he meets with one disillussion after another. This is to be the last week of his life. The story is based on the life of Renato Cacciopoli, the grandson of the Russian anarchist Bakounine.

Mario Martone was born in Naples in 1960. In 1977, he founded the avant-garde theatre group, Falso Movimento, which mounted productions ranging from Verdi's "Othello" to "Return to Alphaville". In 1987, his group merged with two other Napolitan troupes to form Teatri Uniti which produced "Death of a Neapolitan Mathematician".
