1996 Fiction 1h51
At a very young age, Marian, a young Tsigane, was taken away from his parents and placed in care, in the enclosed universe of an orphanage where he spent his entire childhood, despised by all. A few years later, he was declared "mentally retarded" and was sent to a specialized institution. Because of his origins, he is constantly harassed and fights back as best he can. Whenever Marian believes that he can see light at the end of the tunnel and that he will soon recover his freedom, it quickly vanishes. "Ten years ago, I discovered the world of reformatory schools where frustration, spitefulness and ugliness prevail. Most children were Tsigane. Because they are considered second rate citizens, they have been subjected to brutal assimilation policies that have nevertheless failed. I met Marian in one of these schools. He was believed to be dangerous and had a "red file". He inspired me to make this film.". - Petr Václav.

Petr Václav was born in 1967. He studied in the Documentary Department of the FAMU in Prague. Between 1989 and 1993, he wrote and directed four documentary shorts. "Marian" was inspired by a living person whom Petr Václav met for the first time in a reformatory school while accompanying a teacher for children with learning disabilities. He created his own production company to make "Marian", his first fictional film. In 1996, "Marian" was awarded the Silver Leopard at the Lucarno Film Festival.
