Maurice Pialat undertook his first feature-length film rather belatedly, at 43 years of age, with the financial and moral support of François Truffaut. Filmed in only fifteen days, the film deals with a delicate social theme, and is based on research previously performed by the director. When casting the film, Maurice Pialat chose to call on non-professional actors, such as for the Thierry couple, a couple who actually adopts abandoned children, and also chose to film in natural settings. "I like the photo of Naked Childhood for its ugliness and harshness. For this film, I refused to aesthetically review each scene. I left the walls as they were – yellow – because they offend the eye." (M. Pialat)
