Sixteen year-old Mathilde has disappeared. She apparently committed suicide by jumping into the Loire river. Her father and two brothers search the river for her body. All three are burdened by guilt and sadness but, with time and the contact they share with their family and friends, they try to learn to live without Mathilde.

Zoé Galeron was born in 1972. From 1992 to 1996, she worked on the scripts of several videos, short and medium-length films and wrote articles for BREF magazine. In 1995, she enrolled in the Fémis screenplay-writing department and collaborated on the scripts of several films. As part of her studies, she directed A petit feu in 1996 on 16mm film, and directed a documentary film for the CNRS Image on Beta, entitled Ecrivains publics. L'Echappée is her first post-graduation film.
