Le Roi et l'oiseau
Paul Grimault

King Charles V + III = VIII + VIII = XVI (Charles Fifth and Three make Eight and Eight make Sixteen) is a tyrant who rules over the kingdom of Takicardie. This king is in love with a charming shepherdess, but the young girl's heart is taken by the little chimneysweep (these two characters came out of paintings in the royal chamber, as well as the king who reigns after the police have chased the sweep and the princess). With the help of a bird, who usually mocks the king, they manage to escape from the royal palace, pursued by the police. The film poetically and gently narrates this chase.

It took Paul Grimault several years to get everything he needed to make the film, starting in 1977. He also had to overcome the incredulity of many and the obvious technical difficulties, and also deal with the deaths of several of the people working on the film, including animators, artists, composer Joseph Kosma and Pierre Brasseur who was the voice of the Bird. The premier of the new film was on 19 March 1980 and Le Roi et l'oiseau (The King and the Mockingbird) won the 1979 Prix Louis Delluc. The film had more than 1.7 million entries when it was released.
