Without naming him openly, Mia Hansen-Løve gives us a portrait of Humbert Balsan, a producer she was close to and who committed suicide in 2005, crippled with debt. “Le Père de mes enfants" (Father of my Children) is a film about love for cinema, collective creation, the unseen work of those behind the scenes, commitment. We see a man doing his job with nobility. Nonetheless the film is not just made for film professionals. It is first and foremost a film about family. Grégoire leaves two behind him in tears: the radiant family made up of his wife and daughters, who all too often complained about seeing him with a telephone to his ear; and the buzzing, nervy hive of his staff”.
