Le Garçu
Maurice Pialat
Three and a half year-old Antoine is the son of Sophie and Gérard, a couple on the verge of divorce. On vacation on the island of Mauritius, Sophie finally breaks the relationship off and returns home with Antoine. In Paris, Gérard contents himself with dramatic visits and gift giving, with jealousy and remarks about the company Sophie keeps, a certain Jeannot with whom she decides to live.

Maurice Pialat had the idea to use his son Antoine in the film, for whom he "wanted to leave something behind" in a fiction co-written with his wife Sylvie Danton. "During the shooting, there were elements of childhood I didn't know how to capture, elements that change with the passing time. I often worked in very short takes, because Antoine wasn't interested in acting... The fleeting nature of time envelopes the film." (M. Pialat) "This constant spur-of-the-moment filming has an unpredictable subject - a child, Maurice's child, who he filmed spontaneously after asking himself the question: what will he know once I'm dead?" (G. Depardieu) Pialat also makes reference in this film to the death of the "Garçu", his own father, echoing The Mouth Agape and its evocation of his own mother's death.
