Le Fantôme de la liberté (The Phantom of Liberty) is an eccentric and out of the ordinary sketch film. The codes of propriety and morals of life in society are examined in depth through Buñuel's provocative humour. What is usually kept hidden, what is usually never said out loud is brought shown in full light...

"In The Phantom of Liberty there is not one single theme, or one single story, but characters who live out a brief episode and then give way to others, who, in turn, do the same thing. It is a different form of "discontinued continuity". (Luis Buñuel) The narrative form that Buñuel was so attached to, the apparent absence of need between events becomes absolute here. This was already the case in L'Âge d'or (The Golden Age), but with this film the progress of the narration and the transitions between the scenes are "smoother". What comes out is a reflection on the laws of randomness: The Phantom of Liberty only imitates the mechanism of chance. It was written in a state of consciousness; it is not a dream, nor an incoherent stream of images". (Luis Buñuel)
