"One this is sure, this film is for a laugh. It is very expensive, it is very big, and at the end of the day, for a laugh! I agree it's paradoxical. But I have wanted to make it for a long time. I took the time needed to make this dream come true. It will be my last childhood film!" (Luc Besson) The film resembles its director: both ambitious and ironic, and it is this double movement which means that The Fifth Element avoids the clichés and stumbling blocks of science fiction. The traditional basic premise, i.e. saving the world, is transformed here into the grandiose comic, so distant from the traditional Hollywood approach. Luc Besson likes to remind how French his film is: apart from the special effects and the actors, the film owes nothing to the Americans.
