Made in 1986, Castle in the Sky looks into a number of recurring themes in the work of Miyazaki Hayao. Already at the heart of the plot is the destruction nature by man's greed, a theme seen in Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984), and again in Princess Mononoke (1997) and the director's avowed pessimism. Here it is particularly the danger of power, in this case the power of Sheet's jewel, that the director wanted to stress, particularly in the sequences at the end of the film. The absence of manichaeism is also very present, no characters being either black or white, as they never are in Princesse Mononoke and above all in Spitied Away (2001). The only exception is the manipulator Muska, who is one of the rare characters in Miyazaki's films who is totally negative.
