Six bourgeois friends try to dine together. But every time they sit down at the table something happens to disturb their meal or make it impossible. The principle of a meal which is always either missed or put off is the thread running through the story.

Buñuel does not condemn the bourgeoisie or even criticise it. To those who are tempted to think otherwise he replies: "It is not a satire. I think it is the film where there is the most gentle humour. I wasn't looking to make people laugh out loud from beginning to end". Buñuel always showed himself sceptical about the analysis and interpretation of his films. He makes do perfectly with a minimal narration which takes the viewer in cultivating ambiguity and surprise. The dreams in the film are elements of the reality in it: "dreams are an extension of reality, of the state of waking. In a film they only have any value it you don't announce it : ‘This is a dream', because otherwise the audience will say ‘Ah, this is a dream, and is therefore without importance'. This disappoints audiences. And the film loses its mystery, its power to disturb". (Luis Buñuel)
