“While everything seemed peaceful and harmonious, suffering comes into this portrait of a 50-something philosophy teacher: her husband leaves her. But the pain is tempered by a whole range of other feelings. L'Avenir (Things to Come) attracts through its discreet distance and absence of pathos. Mia Hansen-Løve outlines rather than explains, filming her heroine as a character at the crossroads. Not long after we learn that she was now going to have to live alone, we see Nathalie in the sun, on the grass in a Paris park. Hansen-Løve adds suspended gentleness to the grief. Ideas flow around, there is passion and impetus. The film gives as much importance to silences as it does to dialogue, to the coloured poetry of the landscapes – from Brittany at low tide to the golden Vercors – as to quotes from Rousseau or Pascal. There is also humour, with a big black moody cat called Pandora. And then there is Isabelle Huppert, heart-breaking, constantly moving, in panic.
