In La Voie Lactée (The Milky Way) Buñuel imposes the relativity of the narration as a sine qua non of the film. The characters live through a slice of history, mainly focused on conflicts in the idea of religion. "Heresy has always interested me in the same way as deviances of the human mind have, whether they are in the world of religion, culture or politics. I wanted a somewhat Romanesque form, not a sketch film, and so I thought about tramps going on a pilgrimage through time and space and meeting heresies on their way". (Luis Buñuel) The development of the theological discourse of the film needed a great deal of documentary work: historical reading and the picaresque Spanish novel helped in constructing both the form and the substance of the film.
