In La sconfitta, the documentary aesthetic and the formal experimentation run hand in hand. With his Super8 camera Moretti explores the many possibilities of cinematographic language. He looks into, for instance, the way in which the contrasts between the sound and the image can engender a discourse. Technically a little clumsy, the whole is very spontaneous and already bears witness to ideas that will inhabit the director throughout his career. Moretti looks mockingly and humorously at questions as serious as communism and capitalism. Concerning the origin of the title, Moretti explained that "For La sconfitta (The Defeat), it is fairly clear: I thought about the existential political defeat of the protagonist. It is the stor of a crisis. Even if the treatment is ironic."
