In the small town of Murci lost in the hills of Tuscany, tradition prevails: young girls marry the boys their parents choose for them. Hence, Serana, a young woman of twenty one years, is expecting the return of her long-standing fiancé, Rossano, a sailor. But really, she longs to escape this too predictable destiny, and is counting on her friend, Mafalda, to help her. One day a stranger, Johan the Dutch man, arrives in Murci to take over a disused farm. His presence attracts the attention of the two young women, causing the town to gossip.
