Death in the Garden is a heterogeneous mix : Simone Signoret's cheekiness combines with the tropical backdrop of the Mexican jungle, Michel Piccoli is cast against type as a priest, and the script was co-written by Queneau. "Queneau was an exceptional writer, he had an immense sense of the spoken word. He found solutions which are a model of what good film dialogue is", said Buñuel. Once again, Buñuel observes human behaviour in extreme situations. The psychology of the characters disappears to be replaced by a more empirical knowledge. "What interests me is seeing how circumstances make characters develop. It is like plunging them in culture fluid". (Luis Buñuel)
