Although Buñuel always kept his distances from Italian neo-realism, La Ilusión viaja en tranvía (Illusion Travels by Streetcar) is the first film that he consents to link, in certain aspects, to the post-war movement. In this "road movie" the streetcar goes through picturesque landscapes which show part of Mexican social reality. For José de La Colina, Buñuel works by "collage", like Max Ernst's old images. "This could be like the images in La Femme 100 têtes: taking images from the Rastro, or from a church, images of quarters of meat or bigots carrying an image of the virgin, and sticking them on the image of the inside of the streetcar" (Luis Buñuel).
