Jean Fournier, a humble bank clerk, is led into gambling by his colleague Caron. Blessed with luck he goes to Nice against the advice of his father. In this sanctuary he meets his queen, Jackie, with whom he immediately falls in love. Jackie is not insensitive to Jean's charms, but the wings of their love will be burnt by the passion for gambling.

After being assistant to Paul Grimaud for his commercials and Georges Rouquier for two films, Jacques Demy made his first short at the age of 24, Le Sabotier du Val de Loire in 1955. This was followed by features that he wrote and directed. Some have remained jewels in the crown of the so-called New Wave: Lola in 1960, which marked the beginning of his collaboration with Michel Legrand, La Baie des anges (Bay of Angels) in 1962, Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg) in 1963 (Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, Prix Louis-Delluc, nominated for the Oscars), Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (TheYoung Girls of Rochefort) in 1966 and Peau d'Âne (Once Upon a Time) in 1970. He also made films in English, Model Shop in 1968, The Pied Piper in 1971 and Lady Oscar in 1978. Une chambre en ville (A Room in Town) (1982) I a film which is entirely in song, this time with composer Michel Colombier. His last film, shot in 1988, is a musical, Trois places pour le 26 (Three Seats for the 26th) with music by Michel Legrand.
