"Juha is a silent film. It's thus both archaic and experimental, a silent film put to the test by the modern spectator for whom a film without colour or sound is lacking something." (J.M. Frodon) "I have watched a lot of films and met a lot of people. I've noticed that we speak a great deal, both in films and in life. All of these words are like promises we never keep. I started dreaming of a place where no one speaks. That's how I came to the idea of a cinematographic church that preaches silence!" "Without dialogue, a filmmaker has to concentrate more, he doesn't have as many easy solutions. The appearance of dialogue in films simplified their narration but made them more clumsy. (...) The day when cinema celebrated the arrival of dialogue, its stories lost their purity and cinema lost its essence: innocence." (A. Kaurismäki)
