Jizda
Jan Sverak

Too beautiful for them. Much too beautiful in her little flowered dress, with all her frckles. Too beautiful not to be hiding dangerous secrets, not to be runaway. But, doesn't she refuse to say what her name is ? They were off on an "America" holiday : done up car, laddish jokes, music. They wanted to play "Easy Rider" through their native Bohemia. Except they saw this girl and their holiday took an other direction. To please her they play as highway robbers, great seducers, fabulous lovers. Two boys, a girl, the road : everything is there for things to go badly wrong. For a long time, the road movie was an American speciality before becoming a European way of looking at America. With "Jizda", Jan Sverak succeeds in an impossible combination of the road movie and central Europe. He gives us an adventure filled with freedom, ease, unselfconsciousness, and grace.
